My 10mm WW2 Collections
I started collecting 10mm figures in August 2008 after buying a boxed German Battlegroup from Magister Militum at the Britcon show held in Manchester, England.
Without having a clue as to what I was buying or how useful it was going to be I intended this boxed set to form the basis of my German collection. At this time I didn't know the difference between an SdKfz and a Pz or between an Opel Blitz and a Kubelwagon so I was a complete newbie.
I also took the opportunity to purchase the Blitzkrieg Commander set of WW2 rules which will be the system under which I collect and wargame WW2.
These pages will follow my collection of 10mm figures as it grows and as more nationalities are added. It will comprise of my current figures and my planned purchases.
On Collecting...
"The advertisement of a sale is a signal which at once puts a thousand hearts in motion, and brings contenders from every part to the scene of distribution. He that had resolved to buy no more, feels his constancy subdued; there is now something in the catalogue which completes his cabinet, and which he was never before able to find. He whose sober reflections inform him, that of adding collection to collection there is no end, and that it is wise to leave early that which must be left imperfect at last, yet cannot withhold himself from coming to see what it is that brings so many together, and when he comes is soon overpowered by his habitual passion; he is attracted by rarity, seduced by example, and inflamed by competition." - Samuel Johnson, 1759
10mm Figure Suppliers
There are a number of manufacturers at this scale and in some ways this is both a blessing and and a curse. On the plus side it means that practically every figure or vehicle you are ever likely to want is available. On the other hand, no two manufacturers produce figures at exactly the same size (see opposite). Here is a list of the main manufacturers at this scale.
Magister Militum
Suppliers of the first WW2 10mm figures I ever purchased. The models and figures are very good and paint-up well. The Magister Militum website is still being developed but the range of figures and models is already quite large and expanding.
Minifigs
A good range of WW2 figures and models although be careful since they advertise their figures as 12mm rather than 10mm. Since I have not bought from them yet I am unable to say how they compare against, say,Pendraken 10mm figures.
Their website carries a full listing of most WW2 nationalities.
Pendraken
Pendraken carry an extensive range of WW2 figures and models which can be found on the Pendraken website.
If you are looking for a ready made Battlegroup then Pendraken offer both 'starter' and 'veteran' sets ranging from £50 to £100. The list of available Battlegroups can be found here.
East Riding Miniatures
Produce pre-cut BKC bases from 2mm MDF. If, like me, you have always gone to the trouble of cutting your own bases then you will realise just how convenient this service is. Once I found out about them I immediately ordered and was not disappointed. I suggest that you do the same as they save a considerable amount of time and effort for a relatively small outlay. Visit the East Riding Miniatures website for more details.
